Children’s books illustrators USP’s
A unique selling point (USP) for a children's books illustrator is a distinctive feature or quality that sets them apart from others in the industry. Looking at other children’s books illustrators out there, here are a few examples of compelling USPs I have found:
1. A distinctive art style: Having a unique and recognisable art style that resonates with children and brings stories to life in a captivating way. That is by far the most dominant USP.
2. A specialisation in diverse characters and themes: A lot of publishers are focussed on illustrating diverse characters with inclusive stories, celebrating various cultures, abilities, and backgrounds. Some illustrators feature only this in their portfolio.
3. Educational illustrations: Creating illustrations that are not only visually appealing but also educational, incorporating elements that help children learn about specific topics or concepts. I have found illustrators that focus on birds, and others that focus on food.
4. Experience and expertise in child development: Leveraging knowledge of child psychology and development to create age-appropriate, engaging, and emotionally resonant illustrations. Illustrations for 0-3 year olds are usually very different to illustrations for 4-7 years old for example.
Choosing a USP that aligns with your strengths and passions will help differentiate you from other illustrators and attract the right audience or clients.
How to find out what your USP is ?
Step 1: Illustrate things that make you happy.
Step 2: Have a think about what your unique selling point could be.
Step 3: Ask others to have a look at your portfolio of work and describe it to you using only three words.
That is an easy way to find out what your USP could be.
