Is white a colour?

The question of whether white is or is not a color or not can be approached in different ways.

From a scientific point of view, white is generally considered to be a color. In physics and optics, white light is the combination of all visible wavelengths of light in equal proportions. When light strikes an object and reflects off its surface without significant absorption, it appears white to our eyes. This means that white is not a specific wavelength of light but rather a combination of all visible colours.

From a human point of view, white is sometimes regarded as the absence of colour. This perspective stems from the fact that our perception of colour arises from the stimulation of specialised cells in our eyes called cones. These cones are sensitive to different wavelengths of light, and when all three types of cones are stimulated equally, we perceive the sensation of white. In this sense, white could be seen as the perception of no specific hue.

While white is often considered a colour from a scientific standpoint, its perception as a colour can vary depending on the context and the field of study. The question of whether white is a colour or not can lead to diverse interpretations and discussions based on scientific, perceptual, cultural, and artistic perspectives. In my opinion, there is no right or wrong answer to this question.
