So you have written a story and want to publish it …. what should you do next?
-
1 - Find an editor
Find an editor experienced in the type of children’s book you want to publish, so they can help you get your text just right. Very often I receive texts that are full of errors.
If you struggle with finding one, you can drop me a line, and I will try to help.
-
2 - Find an illustrator
Finding the right illustrator for your book project is crucial. And you get what you pay for.
I will always keep the source files of my illustrations and will use the images in my portfolio once the project has launched.
Please note that publishing houses usually have their own illustrators.
-
3 - How much and how long?
It all depends on the length of the book, the level of detail you require, the number of characters and the complexity of the backgrounds.
Send me your manuscript and lets talk. Please note that it can take two to three months from start to finish to illustrate and design a 32 page book properly.
-
4 -Work Ethics
I work best when I have been given all the information regarding the project. That means that trust and honesty are a necessary part of my process. You will need to trust that I will be doing my very best for you, and I will trust that you will provide me with all the information, including your vision for the book before we begin.
I only take on one commissioned project at a time, so you will get my undivided attention during this time.
-
5 - Process
Once I have been debriefed on the project and have received the 50% payment upfront, I will start sketching. You will be involved in the process. You will see character sketches and page layouts roughly sketched. This process is done using pencil and paper.
Once these are approved and the drawing phase has started, you will have a maximum of 1 round of corrections/ adjustments before I start colouring the illustration(s). More corrections/ adjustments can be made for an additional fee.
-
6 - Payment terms and conditions
Before I start sketching and after we have discussed the work, I ask that you send me 50% of the total amount upfront. Once this is received, I will start working. I only accept bank transfers. Currency is GBP (British Pounds).
The remaining 50% is due once I have completed my work. You will receive the low res file(s) (these will not be suitable for printing) . Once I receive the remaining 50%, I will send you the high resolution file(s) through email or dropbox.
-
7 - Details
In order for me to better understand what you need and before I send you a quote, I need to know the answers to a few questions such as the ones below for example:
What kind of book is it? Precise target audience? Page size? Number of pages (24, 32 or 40) ? Deadline ? Have you got a budget and if you do, what is it?
In other words, you will need to have chosen your publishing platform so we can proceed. If you are unsure about the platform aspect of the book, I can help you for an additional fee.
-
8 - Copyright
Copyright is granted for the purpose of the mentioned project only.
The Artist retains the copyright of the Artwork for self-promotion, in the Artist's portfolio, and for inclusion in collections of the Artist's work, provided that the Artist does not use the Artwork in connection with any literary or cinematic work of any kind.
Should you wish to license the illustrations for products such as prints, cards, calendars and similar products, this can be negotiated for an additional fee.
-
9 - Termination of contract
If you no longer require the work at any point during the production process, there will be no refund of the 50% downpayment as this will be considered the fee to compensate me for the time spent working on it.
In case I can’t complete the work required for any particular reason, a full refund will be provided.
